Two Cheaper Districts

Singapore is a great travel destination. With shopping and food found virtually everywhere in the city-state, Singapore is one of the top destinations in Asia. Let’s face it, though, dropping in for a couple of days or a week can be quite expensive.

That’s where Balestier and Geylang come in. These two districts have some of the cheaper accommodations and eateries in Singapore. There are few sights in these mainly residential areas, but enough to keep one busy for a day. Balestier is near enough to Orchard Road to be considered part of Central Singapore. Buses run on a regular basis from Baluster to virtually everywhere in Singapore. They also connect the outermost areas of the district to the train stations.

Geylang, on Singapore’s eastern coast, is famous for its food and miles of sandy beaches. The laid-back atmosphere is reason enough to base yourself in this district. The train connects Geylang with the rest of Singapore. Being a relatively small place to begin with, getting from outer lying areas to Central Singapore is not a hassle at all, especially compared to many other metropolises.

Both Balestier and Geylang have somewhat seedy images. Keep in mind, though, that this is Singapore, and all things are relative. Both areas have red-light districts, though such activities are usually kept under the radar, meaning you’d have to go looking for certain activities in order to see them. The only thing to be aware of is that certain bars in both Balestier and, especially, Geylang, many bars cater to the sex trade, if they aren’t outright brothels. If you are not sure where to have a nightcap and you wish to avoid the “naughty” bars, as a local for advice. Remember, this is Singapore and English is widely spoken.

Balestier Road is home to some good restaurants. If the bars in the area don’t interest you, head for the restaurants. Many are open quite late and serve a variety of cuisine.

In Geylang, chili crab and laksa, local favorites of Malay origin, are widely available. Some people head to the coast to simply eat these dishes. A walk through the area in the afternoon will reveal numerous seafood restaurants serving fresh and unique fare. Chiu Chow, Malay, and Indian cuisines are widespread.

The cheap accommodations of some of Singapore’s less known districts makes them attractive to budget travelers, but the lively atmosphere and delicious food mean that anyone would enjoy spending part of their vacation off the beaten path.
